Will Firefly Lane ever get a Season 3?

Netflix’s hit Firefly Lane became a fan favorite and gained stupendous popularity the moment it was launched.

Launching on Netflix in February 2021, the 10-episode emotional rollercoaster tracked several decades of friendship between Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke).

Netflix renewed the hit show for a second season within three months of its premiere, much to the delight of the fans. Let’s dive into the details and answer all your questions.

1. Will there be a Season 3 of Firefly Lane?

There will not a Season 3 of Firefly Lane. The second half of the second season, comprised of seven episodes, will release on Netflix on June 8, 2023. Netflix has confirmed that Firefly Lane Season 2 would be the last chapter of the show.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Chalke warned that viewers are going to need tissues when the final episodes eventually roll around.

You need some. I’m excited for everyone to see it. Season 1 created a lot of questions and then Season 2 Part 1 answered those, and now there are a lot more questions and all of those will be answered in the second half. But there’s also lots of levity. One thing I love about the show is that there’s a balance between the heavy stuff and then there’s some humor woven in there, which I think is what you need so that you can exhale.

2. Was Firefly Lane canceled after Season 2?

Netflix announced ahead of Season 2 that it would be the show’s final one.

The first season was a massive hit with the audiences, making it the most-watched show on the streamer for two weeks. It went on to be watched by at least 50 million households.

Since the series is based on Kristin Hannah’s novel of the same name, we know that Kate will be told that her cancer is terminal. When Tully learns of the news, she rushes back home to Kate’s side to provide her old friend the support she needs before passing away.

The fans will surely need tissues since the second part will also cover Hannah’s follow-up book, Fly Away. This book focuses on the aftermath of Kate’s death and how it still impacts Tully four years later.

Although seven episodes may not seem enough to cover Kate’s death and explore the events of Fly Away, this has always been showrunner Maggie Friedman’s plan.

We are all aware of Netflix’s bad habit of canceling shows with multiple cliffhangers remaining unaddressed. Some of its latest casualties include First Kill, Warrior Nun, The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself, and Fate: The Winx Saga, to name a few.

Friedman simply wasn’t prepared for that risk. So, to ensure that the story was told in its entirety, the makers took the decision to “supersize” Season 2.

Originally, Season 2 was just going to be ten episodes, but I was talking to one of the Netflix executives who’s been such a great champion of the show and said, “I know where the end of the story is. I know exactly what I want it to be. I just want to make sure that we get there and don’t end on a cliffhanger and then something happens and we don’t complete it.” I wanted to make sure that I got to tell the full story.

Maggie Friedman

So, here is your answer. Friedman didn’t want us to suffer at the hands of another Netflix cancelation, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Well, you never know. A third season might be possible in the future if Hannah decides to write a third book, which she hasn’t ruled out yet.

3. Will another network pick up Firefly Lane?

There is no official confirmation as to whether there are chances of another streaming service picking up the show and renewing it for a third season.

However, with the show being well-received by critics and fans, if Season 2 was to have some success, it isn’t out of the question to see another streaming service pick up the series.

So, if series creator Maggie Friedman has more stories to flesh out from Kristin Hannah’s novel, and Heigl and Chalke would be on board, nothing is out of the question. If anything does change regarding this, we will be sure to let you know.
