Did ‘Lucifer’ Makers Go a Step Too Far With the Addition of “God”?

Netflix released the trailer for Lucifer‘s Season 5 Part 2, and it has God, not just making an appearance, but apparently, playing a big role in it.

In the trailer, we see Lucifer trying to work hard to resolve his issues with his dad, God. Lucifer is even seen taking him to therapy and mentions how it is a necessity for him to get over their problems so that he can finally have healthy relationships with others. Chloe goes as far as to say to God, ‘You are a terrible father… respectfully.’

We also see God telling Lucifer that he cannot “fix” Lucifer and that it’s time for him to retire from his duties as “God”. Amenadiel mentions how they have the most dysfunctional family. Seeing how being rebellious is in Lucifer’s nature, he decided that he wants to be the new God.

You may not know how to feel about a character as serious as God in a light comedy like Lucifer. Read on to find out what the comics say about Lucifer’s dad, God. In DC Universe, The Presence is the true God of DC, the one who created everything, and also Lucifer’s father.

In the comics, Elaine Belloc takes The Presence’s place as the God of Creation while Lucifer strikes Michael’s body to use the demiurgic power inside him to produce a second “Big Bang” and forges a new universe. He then decides to travel beyond his Father’s influence into the undefined void. It would be interesting to see if Lucifer follows the same path in the series or if he has a different destiny altogether.

The most important thing to consider while talking about this show is that even though Lucifer, at its core, might be inspired by actual mythology and in a way, it can be called quasi-biblical; it is still based on a comic book character and hence it can never be a direct representation of The Devil in Christianity or any other religion.

To put it in simple words, it is just another crime drama/comedy show with a twist. The irony of it all being that the Devil helps catch the criminals when since forever, he has always been the one to be blamed for all of our misdoings, with popular phrases like ‘The Devil made me do it.’

Lucifer repeatedly talks about how ridiculous it is to blame it all on him and call him a being devoid of any emotions or remorse when he is just a punisher of evil and not the actual embodiment of evil. This is proven in Season 2 when Lucifer is trapped in his own hell cycle for killing Uriel.

Some fan theories also wonder whether God has been grooming Lucifer to take over as ‘God’ all along. As we already know, God had asked Amenadiel to bless Chloe’s parents so that they could give birth to her, specifically for her to cross Lucifer’s path. This would make Chloe the Goddess who will rule alongside Lucifer if this is all supposed to be a part of God’s elaborate plan for him.

We will only be able to react appropriately once Lucifer Season 5B premieres on Netflix on May 28. As we already know, trailers often misguide the audience, so maybe God might end up having very little screen time. Perhaps the greatest trick the Devil will pull is to convince the world he will be God after all.
