Will Homelander die in season 3? Does he die in the comics?

Homelander has been the main antagonist of The Boys TV series since season 1. He is one of the most invincible superheroes of all time, whose powers are so good that he just can’t be killed.

However, in season 3, Billy Butcher comes across the story of Soldier Boy. The supposedly invincible superhero who got killed by some weapon back in the 80s. He’s also given a new serum by Queen Maeve.

This serum is known as Compound V24, which gives any person superpowers for 24 hours. Maeve gives him three vials to use on himself to stand a chance against any supes he takes on.

With these developments, an obvious question arises. Will Homelander die in The Boys season 3?

It isn’t confirmed, but Homelander might NOT die in The Boys season 3. Although he was killed by Black Noir in the comics, the latter’s arc is very different in the series. Billy might go into a face-off with Homelander, but he might not be able to kill him.

One of the main reasons why I feel Homelander might not die is because The Boys might have a season 4, and the creators would want to keep their favorite antagonist alive for it. However, there are other reasons, too, which are connected to the two subplots of Soldier Boy and Butcher’s superpowers. Let me break it down for you.

Soldier Boy is Not Dead

In episode 3, Grace Mallory narrates the story of how Soldier Boy apparently died. In 1984, Mallory was working on a mission in Nicaragua along with her team and a few supes. Unfortunately, the entire operation was botched because the enemies, along with Russian special forces, attacked their camp.

In the process, numerous supes got hurt, soldiers died, and Crimson Countess (One of the supes) told Grace how the Russians killed Soldier Boy with a weapon and carried away his body. While this makes up for a great story, it is most likely false.

The Boys Season 3 trailer showcased a Soldier Boy disconnecting some wires or tubes from his body. His hair is unkempt, and his beard is overgrown. This means he is still alive and was captured for purposes we don’t know yet.

Besides this, we also see him walking on the road with tall buildings all around. These buildings look like the ones we currently have, which means he has returned, and might cause some havoc.

Soldier Boy being alive means he didn’t die because of any weapon, which means whatever Billy Butcher is hunting for, to kill Homelander, might not even exist. This is perhaps one reason why Homelander might survive.

Billy Butcher is a Supe but Not as Strong as Homelander

After Butch injects himself with Compound V24, he gains powers similar to Homelander. However, they’re pretty erratic and uncontrollable. Besides this, he also has numerous side effects that ruin his body.

In a scene, we see him fight a supe and beat him into a pulp. He even shoots heat beams from his eyes but hardly has any accuracy.

On the other hand, Homelander has lived with superpowers from a very young age. He knows how to control them and, in any battle, can overpower his opponents without breaking a sweat.

If the two go into combat, Billy won’t be able to kill off Homelander. Even if he gets help from the rest of the boys, at best, he can defeat him only to fight him another day.

Homelander Dies in the Comics

In the comics, Homelander is killed by Black Noir, who happens to be a Homelander clone. He was built to destroy the antagonist if he ever goes rogue.

Black Noir’s arc in the comics is pretty different from the one in the show. He has a much bigger significance. He is the clone who is much more powerful, brutal, and evil than the antagonist itself.

When the all-American superhero goes insane, Noir gets the job done. How all of this unfolds is an exciting story in itself. What’s remarkable is how Butcher never gets to kill the original Homelander.

About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
