Superman & Lois: Does Jonathan Kent get his superpowers?

At the beginning of CW’s Superman & Lois, Jonathan Kent (Jordan Elsass) had quite an exciting ride. He was uprooted from the only life he had ever known in Metropolis, where he was the popular guy with a girlfriend and his high school’s starting quarterback.

Through the freshman season, audiences saw him struggle to adjust to his new life in Smallville and try to fit in amid all the high-flying heroism that had been going on.

Lois Lane and Clark Kent always thought that one of their sons had inherited Superman’s powers. They believed that Jonathan was the one since everything in his life appeared too easy. However, that wasn’t the case, and it was revealed that Jonathan’s twin, Jordan, had Clark’s Kryptonian abilities.

It’s evident that he, too, was struggling trying to control his limited superpowers and his anxiety. Jonathan was slightly envious of his brother’s powers, and while he said he didn’t care, he seemed to feel a bit left out.

Since Season 1 ended, fans wondered if Jonathan would ever get his powers.

How does Jonathan develop his powers?

Putting a new spin on Arrowverse drug stories, Jordan got his powers solely from X-Kryptonite. With the same not happening for Jonathan, the Kent family couldn’t pinpoint precisely why Jordan’s powers stuck, and Jonathan’s didn’t, other than simply a fluke of birth.

Whatever the reason, Jonathan tried to change things in season 2 after he realized other players on the Smallville High football team used performance-enhancing drugs.

How is Jonathan Hinted at Becoming a Superboy?

While Jordan’s transition to becoming Superboy is mainly natural, Jonathan’s comes about through circumstances that the Man of Steel would surely frown upon. Jonathan is entirely motivated by his envy for both his brother and his top football rival Timmy Ryan.

Indeed, Jonathan can hardly be blamed for experiencing such a primary human emotion, especially as an adolescent. Season 2’s theme about the meaning of Superman’s S-shield also adds more complexity to Jonathan’s drugstore. Nonetheless, his path to becoming Superboy had partially been set in motion using performance-enhancing drugs.

Jordan Elsass talks about his character’s superpowers

When Jordan Elsass, who portrays Jonathan, was asked in an interview whether or not he thought his character should have powers, he said, “This is such a good question, and nobody’s been asking it up until now.”

Jordan also said, “The truth is, I have no idea. The audience has no idea. Nothing’s hinted at. But I’d almost rather he not have powers, or if he’s going to have powers, have them be temporary. Jon’s such a good person, and seeing that being tested because he doesn’t have powers would be so interesting to play with.”

At the end of the interview, Jordan talked about having powers and shared, “So, I want to say that if he is going to get powers, have it be down the road. Maybe this show will make it to Season 5 or Season 6. If he will have powers, then it would be better to have them down the road and first see who Jon is.”

In a way, Jordan does get that wish. The truth is: Jon does get superpowers, but only temporarily.

But it seems confirmed that Jonathan Kent will get his powers in the coming episodes and seasons.
