Squid Game season 2 might not have Jung Ho-yeon, despite fans creating multiple theories about her resurrection. In an interview with The Korea Herald, the actress, who plays defector Kang Sae-byeok, discussed her participation in a potential sequel of Netflix’s biggest series ever – Squid Game.
The tsundere personality of Kang Sae-byeok attracted many, not to forget the undeniable energy of Jung Ho-yeon portraying her. Sae-byeok ends up in the top three of the game before being supposedly stabbed by Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo).
Talking about her character’s end in the drama, Jung Ho-yeon stays in hopes of her Sae-byeok returning but finds her return difficult.
To be honest, I have never thought about (participating in) the next season, because I am dead. We should all wait for brilliant imagination and ideas from the director and Netflix. Let’s wait together.Jung Ho-yeon
Jung Ho-yeon made her debut in the acting industry with Squid Game, after already being among the modeling industry’s top names. She revealed that transitioning from a model to an actor was tough, especially because she and Sae-byeok were poles apart.
Before meeting Sae-byeok, I was more of a self-centered person. This might have been the biggest hurdle for me to overcome when playing the character. I tried many ways to become the real Sae-byeok, and writing a diary was one of them.
While fans might want Sae-byeok back, Jung Ho-yeon is a bit hesitant to essay the role again. A lot of the hesitance comes from the mental and emotional stress she was under while playing the role of Player 067.
In an interview with Vanity Fair too, the actress shared that she doesn’t think Sae-byeok would be back. But she also joked with director Hwang Dong-hyuk about her return as a possible twin or a secret agent – even though they seem more imaginative than the theories.
A top fan theory of Kang Sae-byeok’s return is that her name is never called out when she dies, just like the Old Man’s “death.” According to the theory, Sang-woo and Sae-byeok plotted together and smeared blood on her neck to make her seem dead. Moreover, it states that Sae-byeok escaped from the gift-wrapped coffins with her secret dagger.
Squid Game season 2 is finally canon, but considering a majority of main characters died, it remains to be seen if it would still ignite the same amount of passion from the global audience or not.
