Producer Thinks Sex and the City Reboot Needs More than One Season

The Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That… is preparing to debut on December 9 with a two-parter. The first season is slated for ten episodes.

But producer Michael Patrick King, who helmed the original series as well, believes that the reboot can definitely have more than one season. His reason for this is quite simple—while writing the first season of the reboot, it never felt like they had a complete story.

Read his thoughts from his interview with Emmy magazine:

As we were working, it always felt like the beginning. It didn’t feel like a beginning, middle, and an end. So I think it’s possible to keep going—if we have enough good stories.

He adds that the whole reason they started this venture is that there was a new story to tell.

Indeed, the initial idea was to have a sit-down chat with Sarah-Jessica Parker and release them as a podcast. But both Parker and King questioned why they were still talking about these characters in the past instead of discussing what their present looks like.

Cue the making of And Just Like That…!

Along with Parker’s Carrie, Kristin Davis’ Charlotte and Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda will also be reprising their roles. Prominently missing is Kim Cattrall’s Sam, who was quite a driving force in the original series.

But King doesn’t want us to worry too much about that either. He states that while Cattrall is absent (and has made sufficiently clear she wants nothing to do with the show), Samantha Jones is very much part of the And Just Like That… universe.

That does pique my interest in how the show will address her lack of physical appearance on screen!

The official trailer brings us back to the glorious days of Sex and the City but does not reveal any more details. We do see new bestie Nicole Ari Parker as Lisa interacting with the group.

Another “big” speculation about the debut season is that it may actually follow the storyline of the canceled Sex and the City 3—the sad demise of Mr. Big. This could explain why Carrie is seen with a new man in the trailer, but it could also very well be a red herring.

If you’d like to try your hand at decoding the trailer, watch it below. Or you can simply mark down the days till the show premieres on HBO Max.
