Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’?

The famous South Korean drama Tale of the Nine Tailed on Netflix has recently come to an end. But the fans of the show are eagerly expecting a Season 2 of their favorite show.

The season finale gave us the much-awaited reunion of Lee Yeon, the gumiho and Ji-ah, his lady love.

In the last episode, after Lee Rang sacrificed his life to bring his brother Lee Yeon back to life, Yeon returns but apparently as a human instead of the nine-tailed fox. However, we see that he still holds some powers that he did earlier as the mythical fox. So, all is not over yet!

The Tale of the Nine Tailed is a romantic fantasy drama that tells the story of a nine-tailed mythical fox from a Korean folktale. The unique nine-tailed fox is called the gumiho.

The gumiho, Lee Youn, ventures into the mortal world in the form of a human and eradicates other supernatural creatures that wish to harm the mortal world. He has a personal goal too: to find his reincarnated long-lost love.

The drama’s storyline, though unrealistic, seems to be quite unique to me. What struck me the most in the ending of Season 1, which opens the avenue for a lot of questions. The drama did exceptionally well when it aired on television and also features on several online platforms such as Netflix, WeTV, and Viki.

So it is not unreasonable to expect a Season 2 of the series for some explanations.

Can we expect a Season 2 of Tale of the Nine Tailed? The show ended recently, so we do not yet have a confirmation about whether a Season 2 is on the cards or not. However, the director’s recent statements hint at a new season and several hints from Season 1 also point at it.

1. What Happened at the End of Season 1?

In the final episode of Season 1, we see that Lee Yeon is dead.

Lee Rang, (Yeon’s brother) and Ji-ah (his lady love) discover that one of the ways in which Yeon can be brought back is if one of them sacrifice their life. Lee Rang takes the offer and hence sacrifices his life to bring his brother back.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Tale of the Nine Tailed.

After Yeon comes back to life, he meets a young boy resembling the young self of his brother Rang. It obviously meant Rang has, too, reincarnated back to the mortal world.

However, Lee Yeon is said to have returned without his magical powers, as just another human being. Till now, the ending is a happy-ever-after one with smiles. But the final twist is what opens up the scope for some questions.

We see that Lee Yeon still held some powers when it came to haunting evil spirits. In the final moments, we see Yeon haunting the Spirit of Misfortune. He was also able to swing the sword of the gumiho as though he still had the magical powers which he had as the nine-tailed gumiho. So, Lee Yeon is still not as ordinary as we consider him to be.

I would think that Lee Yeon still holds his special powers as the gumiho and he has not returned as a human. Come on, we even saw Yeon’s eyes light up as he drew the sword! Perhaps the facade of being the “normal human being” is for the sake of Ji-ah’s mental peace and the secret is that Yeon is still a gumiho!

2. Is the Series Finished?

Though the ending of the series had an open-ended twist, the makers could very well write this as the ending of the story. However, fans of the show are eagerly waiting for a new season.

The story could pick up from the Season 1 ending. We could get some explanation of the mysterious reincarnation of Lee Rang and some more closure about Lee Yeon’s powers. There are a lot of possibilities for new directions that can be taken up by a prospective Season 2.

So, it is safe to hope for a new season of the Tale of the Nine Tailed.

3. Will There Be a Season 2?

Since the final episode of the series aired quite recently, the makers have not yet provided us with any clarity about whether or not there will be a Season 2. However, considering the open-ended Season 1 ending and the several unexplained bits and pieces, we could easily take these as hints of an upcoming new season.

The director of Tale of the Nine Tailed has recently spoken about the continuation of the fantasy drama. He mentioned that the amount of love and support that the show has received is huge and a Season 2 will definitely be up for discussion. He did not deny the coming of a new season but neither can we consider his statement as a confirmation.

Though not official, some sources believe a Season 2 is already under production. However, whether it will be a continuation of the story or starring the same cast is not yet confirmed.

I think it’s safe to assume that Season 2 will most likely involve the same cast, that was very much loved by the audience.

All we can do right now is wait for an official statement from the team about the future of the series.
