The Last of Us Creator Discusses Possibilities of a Season 2

Neil Druckmann, the creator of video-game-turned web series, The Last of Us, offers an update on the show’s potential second season.

The Last of Us features Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller, a drug smuggler stuck in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested United States who’s given a crucial task to escort a teenager, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to the Fireflies. Ellie is immune to the infestation, and is humanity’s only hope for an antidote to the rapidly-spreading infection.

Based on the Playstation game of the same name, The Last of Us premiered on HBO Max this month and has been receiving immense critical acclaim from critics and viewers alike. This brings us to the question of the future of the series, and whether there will be another season of The Last of Us.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Druckmann discusses the possibility of a potential season 2 for The Last of Us and if at all it is on the cards.

Fortunately, it’s just good news. Druckmann mentions that season 2 is already on the cards and it will follow the plot of the original video game. Read Druckmann’s entire statement here –

We have had conversations about where we would go if we get renewed. Nothing has been official yet. The response so far has been incredible — reviews, fans, coming off the first episode — so we just pray that people will keep watching, we’ll keep having this response, and there’ll be more story to tell.

We only want to adapt to games, so we don’t want to go outside of them.

However, all of this can only happen if HBO renews the series for a second season. The possibility of The Last of Us season 2 becoming a reality depends on the response of the audience. Considering how Warner Bros. and HBO have been canceling projects left right and center, it is important for a series to hold its ground to be renewed for another season.

As of now, things are looking good for The Last of Us. The series premiere received a fantastic response from the audience, with it garnering HBO’s second-highest debut opening. The viewership increased by 22% with episode 2. If things continue to be this way, there’s no reason why HBO will not renew the fan-favorite series for another season.

The only way we as viewers can support the series is by watching it. So if you want your favorite show to return for a second season, please continue watching it! It’s as simple as that. The Last of Us Star Bella Ramsey is also of the same opinion, as she previously explained that the show’s future depends on the audience. A season 2 is likely if the show is loved by viewers.

Co-creator Craig Mazin mentioned earlier that the makers have no intention of continuing the series beyond the scope of the video game. This means that the show will also have a limited number of seasons and episodes, considering there are only two parts to the game as of now.

If season 2 happens, it will most likely be based on The Last of Us Part II and follow the storyline of the same. As of now, we still have a lot left to explore as season 1 is just on its third episode.
