Cobra Kai Writer Talks S4 Trailer, Future Seasons And The Story’s Ending

Cobra Kai writer Jon Hurwitz hosted a Q&A on Twitter and answered many burning questions that fans of the series had for its upcoming seasons.

With season 4 of the series arriving on Netflix this December, fans asked the writer/showrunner questions, not only about this season but about season 5 and beyond as well.

Answering one such question, Hurwitz said that he knew where the story was headed but didn’t have a clear idea of how many seasons it would take to reach a proper conclusion.

Cobra Kai, which initially started as a YouTube Red series, was picked up by Netflix and quickly climbed the streamer’s charts to become one of its top-rated series.

The series acts as a sequel to the classic 1984 Karate Kid movie. Set 34 years after the film’s events, the series brings back Ralph Macchio and William Zabka to their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively.

Although the series could stretch well up to 6-7 seasons, the showrunners know that they don’t want to extend it more than necessary. While speaking to Collider recently, Hurwitz spoke about the vision he has for the future of the series,

We’ve always had a set end game, as to where the story’s going, but we’ve said from the beginning that we weren’t sure exactly how many seasons it’ll take to get there. We found, even in Season 1 when we were in the writers’ room, there were so many ideas that we had that just didn’t fit into those five hours in the first season, so they ended up getting pushed to the next season.

The writer added that even though these ideas often have room to be explored into future seasons, he doesn’t feel the pressure to extend them,

There are ideas that we talked about at the beginning of the show that showed up in Season 3 or will show up in Season 4. And then, there are ideas that just fall by the wayside. There’s no added pressure to elongate the series. We’re still having a blast making it. There’s still a lot more story to tell, in our minds.

So, we can’t tell you exactly how many seasons we’re going to have, but we know that we’re going to enter each season with enthusiasm and confidence. Eventually, we’ll talk to our friends at Sony and Netflix and say, “We think this is probably around the time we should be winding it down,” and hopefully, they’ll give us that time to do it. We’ll see.

During the Twitter Q&A, Hurwitz also revealed that filming on much of season 5 has already been completed and refused to speak further about it to avoid revealing potential spoilers.

Hurwitz mentioned that the season 4 trailer will be out next month but added that he wasn’t ‘at liberty’ to reveal the exact date.

Cobra Kai season 4 will premiere on Netflix on December 31.
