Shazam 3: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and Speculation

Four years after he landed in theatres for the first time, Zachary Levi’s Shazam returns in the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which is now playing in theaters worldwide. While Shazam movies suit their cause, this franchise might have a problem moving forward.

This is because it is constantly changing its course and still trying to find the right path where it wants to go. This might create a problem for the potential future appearances of Shazam and their family.

Shazam 3 isn’t officially announced, nor it’s known that it’s in early development. The sequel’s release’s timing has put the franchise’s future, including Shazam 3, in murky territory.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ ending leaves room for another movie to happen and continue the adventures of Zachary Levi’s DC hero. James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, recently revealed the first projects set in the new DCU, starting with Superman: Legacy in 2025. He teased that many more projects would be announced soon.

David F. Sandberg said about a third film: “I don’t know the exact plans. I mean, for me, I take it just one movie at a time. When we did the first one, I didn’t expect to do a second one, but that still happened. So we’ll see.”

“For right now, I’m just like, I just want to make a little horror movie or something now. I just did two Shazams in a row. But, I mean, if they want to do more, hey, I’m open to it. Let’s talk. But we’ll see.”

As for what the character’s future could involve, Sandberg says: “There’s certainly much more you can do. I mean with the Shazam and the family. And there are many great villains from the Shazam universe as well.

Without any firm updates on Shazam 3, the performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be a good litmus test for its odds of happening. Shazam 2 received more mixed reviews from critics, leaving it in the Rotten category on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, audiences have found more enjoyment in the movie, even if box office projections are unfavorable.

Shazam 3 Potential Release Date

As mentioned above, Shazam 3 has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros and DC, so we don’t have an official release date. Gunn and Safran confirmed the first part of their new era in January 2023 and a third Shazam! The movie was nowhere to be seen.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen as part of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, though, as they didn’t announce everything. It’s unclear which movie will officially start the new era, but we doubt a Shazam 3 will appear before Superman: Legacy which has a release date of July 11, 2025.

So you’re looking at 2026 at the very earliest and probably much later if Shazam 3 even happens.

Shazam 3 Plot: How does Shazam 2’s ending set up a third movie?

The Shazam! Fury of the Gods post-credit scenes teases what Shazam 3’s story could be. Shazam’s recruitment to the Justice Society means he could meet up with Hawkman, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher to be part of a new team version.

This might even include fighting Black Adam. The other scene hints at Doctor Sivana and Mr. Mind finally returning to exact their villainous plot against Shazam, which could be what Shazam 3 explores.

There is also a way for Shazam 2’s tease from Wonder Woman. It’s about gods and humans learning to live together in harmony to help Shazam 3 fit into DC Universe’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Shazam! Fury of the Gods focuses on the history and current state of DC’s gods.

Wonder Woman’s hope could mean that she and Shazam team up in Shazam 3 to fight other gods, like Hades, who attempt to rise to power.

Who’s coming back for Shazam 3?

Since Shazam 3 hasn’t been confirmed, we have had no official cast confirmations, but we can make some solid guesses.

As per the predictions, all of the Shazam family will be back, so that’s:

  • Zachary Levi and Asher Angel as Shazam/Billy Batson
  • Adam Brody and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman
  • Ross Butler and Ian Chen as Eugene Choi
  • Meagan Good and Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley
  • Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield
  • DJ Cotrona and Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena

Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews are expected to return as their foster parents, Rosa and Victor Vasquez. Following the events of the sequel, Rachel Zegler could reprise her role as Anthea, who ended up getting close to Freddy.

Anthea’s sisters Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Hespera (Helen Mirren), didn’t fare as well and died by the movie’s end. Then again, Djimon Hounson’s Wizard returned from the dead for the sequel, so there might be a way for the Daughter of Atlas to return.
