Will There Be Another FRIENDS Reunion?

There’s no point beating around the bush, so let’s address that elephant in the room.

I know you love FRIENDS and that you probably cried at the Reunion Special. It felt amazing to watch the cast reunite after 16 years and to have them walk you down memory lane. But it’s been a few days since that happened, and now you’re wondering: will I ever be that happy again? Will there ever be another FRIENDS Reunion?

There’s a lot of speculation and plenty of rumors, but don’t worry, I got you. Let’s get on with it!

1. Will There Be Another FRIENDS Reunion Special?

Sadly, there won’t be another FRIENDS Reunion Special in the foreseeable future. Ben Winston suggested that they might do another one in 15 years for the 40th anniversary of the show — but it’s mostly wishful thinking at the moment. For now, there are no plans of redoing what’s already been done, so this is likely the only reunion we get.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that we won’t get interviews or Instagram pictures of the cast together, but that’s about it for now.

It makes sense, though. A big part of the reason this reunion was so special was that it was the first time in 16 years we saw the cast together. If they keep churning out more of these so frequently, these reunions will likely lose their significance among the audience.

1.1  Will There Be A New FRIENDS Episode/Movie?

There will be no new episodes (or movies) for FRIENDS. Creators Marta Cox and David Crane have emphasized that the idea is not something they will ever consider, given how satisfied they are with how the show ended in 2004. Even the cast is not big on the idea, Lisa Kudrow explained, since they feel they are too old to fit into those young archetypes.

Lisa went on to add that to do a new episode, they would have to unravel the happy endings the characters got and that she doesn’t want that to happen since the show ended so perfectly. I can’t say I disagree, to be honest.

The thing is, all of us seem to agree that we want a new movie or even a few new episodes, but none of us can agree on what the show would be about, how the characters must be after growing old, etcetera etcetera. It’s impossible to keep up with everyone’s expectations and make everyone happy. Not to mention that this may potentially ruin what was so beautifully built.

2. Will There Be A Director’s Cut Of FRIENDS Reunion?

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Director Ben Winston confirmed that there won’t be a director’s cut to the Reunion. “Everything I wanted to put in the show, I put in the show,” Ben said, “This really is the Winston Cut.”

According to Winston, he was granted complete creative freedom, which is why there isn’t anything he would like to add or remove from what was released.

There was nothing that I was asked to remove from anybody. They all were very happy with this cut and let me make the film I wanted to make.

I know, it sucks. All of us want to see this unreleased clips. But HBO Max’s YouTube Channel will probably post them as part of their promotions, so keep an eye out for those!
