Yellowjackets S2 To Have More Survivors and Explore the Supernatural

Showtime’s latest hit thriller series, Yellowjackets, just reached its season 1 conclusion, and the writer/producer duo behind it, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have revealed their plans for the future seasons.

The pair, who have many brilliant shows like The Originals and Narcos under their belt, have laid out an intricate plan for Yellowjackets’ next few seasons, promising important answers and new faces.

While appearing on The Playlist’s podcast, The Discourse, Lyle confirmed that next season will see more adult survivors from the crash 25 years ago.

So far, the viewers only know a handful of characters who made it out of the wilderness alive, but Lyle promised new survivors in the present day for season 2,

I guess we can tease for Season 2 – you know, there are other survivors out there and that will come into play.

Yellowjackets’ story is set in the aftermath of a plane crash that left a female high school soccer team stranded in the wilderness for 19 months in the 1990s and how the adult versions of those characters cope in today’s world, years after they made it out alive.

Lyle also discussed the most prominent question of the series – whether the events really involve supernatural activity or were the characters all just very high on magic mushrooms.

I think the most important point when it comes to the supernatural is what our characters believe. That ultimately is more important than what’s real and what isn’t, and, of course, we’re walking a bit of a line and we know it, and we want to make sure that we give our viewers a satisfying experience and there’s only so much ambiguity you can get away with after a certain point, but we’ve always been sort of fascinated by varying phenomena.

Lyle added that the idea of something supernatural and people’s beliefs will play a central role in terms of which direction season 2 would go in thematically. The writer further teased that the series’ other big question about cannibalism will not be dragged further than necessary.

As the season finale made the big reveal about Lottie, diving more into animal sacrifices and cult followings, it’d be interesting to see who else survived but has been under the radar. The finale left more questions than it gave answers; however, fans won’t have to wait for long for season 2.

Showtime Networks president of entertainment Gary Levine recently told Vulture that the next season could return before 2023 so that it doesn’t lose the “momentum” it has gained.

Yellowjackets season 1 is now available to stream on Showtime.
