The Witcher S2 Ending: Everything You Need To Know

In true Witcher fashion, season 2 exposed us to a lot of lore, schemes, and new characters. But I know it can get a little overwhelming and confusing, especially if you know little about the books or video games. So, here’s a breakdown of The Witcher season 2’s ending:

Who is Voleth Meir and Where are the New Monsters Coming From?

I. Conjunction of the Spheres

We have to go right to the beginning — A multiverse exists in The Witcher as well.

However, there was once a time when traveling between the multiverse was quite easy. Then, the Conjunction happened, resulting in spheres getting mixed up and some being wiped out of existence… oof.

This also brought creatures like the ghouls, graveirs, vampires, and more into the Continent. They got trapped here since traversing the multiverse after the Conjunction was not possible.

II. Let’s Talk Monsters

We see a lot of new ugly monsters in season 2. To borrow the witcher’s words, these monsters are not new… they’re just new to the Continent.

Do you recall that tall black monolith that Ciri screamed at in season 1? That, along with other monolithic structures, are actually remnants of the Conjunction that can also serve as radar and portals to the other worlds/spheres.

Now since it has been confirmed that Ciri is of Elder Blood and the Daughter of Chaos, she has the power to travel the multiverse.

So every time Ciri activates her magic around a monolith, it causes a creature (like the mutated Leshen) to enter the Continent through it. The creatures, in turn, are drawn to Ciri because they sense she’s their key to getting back home.

III. Who is Voleth Meir and What Does She Want?

Voleth Meir or the Deathless Mother is an ancient entity who was also trapped in the Continent because of the Conjunction. To stop her from causing any trouble, early witchers bound her to the hut.

(Fun tidbit: She’s actually a new character created just for the show!)

Voleth Meir

She was positioned as season 2’s main villain, torturing Yen, Fringilla, and Francesca with false promises only to strengthen herself on their fear and desperation. Through the three women, Voleth Meir orchestrates a grand plan that allows her to possess Ciri.

But in the end, we realize that all Voleth Meir wanted (like all the other new monsters) was to return to her home sphere, using Ciri as a vessel and the Kaer Morhen monolith as a portal.

IV. How Does Yennefer Get Her Powers Back?

After the Battle of Sodden, Yen realizes she has lost her powers. Voleth Meir tries to tempt/trick Yen by promising to get her powers back if she betrays Geralt and brings Ciri to Voleth Meir.

Yennefer

Although Yen eventually agrees, she changes her mind and tries to stop Voleth Meir when she finds out how special Ciri is. But it’s too late — Voleth Meir is freed, and she possesses Ciri.

To save Ciri, Yen tries to sacrifice herself by becoming Voleth Meir’s vessel. Unexplained, the act results in her gaining her powers again. Welcome back, most powerful mage!

2. The Kingdoms’ Politics: Explained

I. Who Hired Rience?

If you haven’t guessed it already, Rience was hired by none other than Vilgefortz through his secretary, sorceress Lydia.

It’s not that surprising. Since Vilgefortz wants to retain control over the Brotherhood, and with his paramour Tissaia being mum about Ciri, he decides to take matters into his own hands.

II. The Nilfgaard-Elven Alliance

Voleth Meir promised Fringilla and Francesca to fulfill their desires (gaining power and continuing the Elven race, respectively) if they joined hands. So Nilfgaard took the Elves under their protection under the condition of the Elves fighting for Nilfgaard.

Fringilla

What Fringilla does not see coming is Francesca pulling out of their alliance once her baby is born.

It’s far from a new beginning for Francesca — her baby is allegedly killed by a Redanian spy. In anger, she mass kills all babies in Redania. If that does not spell war, I don’t know what does.

III. Redania, Dijkstra and the Bard

Redania is already a wealthy, powerful kingdom, but it would stand to gain more if they have Cintra under their claim. Their tactic is to find Ciri and marry her to the Redanian king Vizimir.

Dijkstra is Redania’s Head of Intelligence who oversees this plan with his aid, mage Philippa, the all-hearing owl.

Plus, they were in league with a particular bard who only recently was singing ill tunes of the witcher. Jaskier and Geralt just made up in the mushiest way possible and I’m not ready for this complication to ruin that!

What is the Wild Hunt?

Yes, I’m talking about those scary skeletal horse riders, who Geralt, Yen, and Ciri see on Voleth Meir’s home sphere.

Going back to the books, the Wild Hunt or Wraiths of Mörhogghis are a group of ancient elves from the Aen Elle realm. Their main objective is to traverse the multiverse, lay waste to the spheres, and capture slaves.

However, upon sensing Ciri’s Elder Blood and the power she holds, their newest mission becomes getting Ciri to join them no matter what.

Who is the White Flame?

The enigmatic, mysterious White Flame is none other than… a hedgehog! Or rather, he’s Duny, who Geralt helped break out of his hedgehog curse in season 1.

Geralt

History lesson: Emhyr var Emries AKA the White Flame is the son of Fergus var Emreis, emperor of Nilfgaard. As we know, Fergus was overthrown and killed by the Usurper. The Usurper was also the one who turned Emhyr into a hedgehog and then left him to die.

But Emhyr survived, took on the name of Duny, fell in love with Pavetta — Cue season 1.

What we will learn in season 3 is how Emhyr defeated the Usurper and gained the Nilfgaardian throne, as well as what plans he has for Ciri. I won’t spoil that for you just yet!

Oh, and turns out it was Emhyr who ordered to get Francesca’s baby killed, not Redania. Now that he knows Fringilla and Cahir have been lying to him, all I can say is rest in peace.
