Writer Thinks Gozilla and Monsterverse Films Could Do Without Humans

The success of Godzilla vs Kong reignited the flame of the Monsterverse movies. Now that the franchise is back in focus, it is important to keep the stories more engaging. One possible way of doing this, writer Max Borenstein says, is by having no humans in the it at all!

With characters like Godzilla, Kong, King Ghidorah and Rodan that are larger than life, it is often a tricky task to stitch their narratives with their puny human counterparts. The consensus has been that the human sub-plots are either underwritten or of not enough significance in the larger scheme of the monsters.

Could this eventually pave way for the Monsterverse to have only no human characters in the movies?

Max Borenstein, who is the writer for all four of Legendary’s Monsterverse films, says that while it would very ambitious, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be possible. Here’re more from his conversion with Slashflim.

Given the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, I’m kind of hoping in whatever the next phase Legendary decides to do that we would see that. I think it’d be pretty cool. I think it is possible. It would be very ambitious. I think ambitious in that Mad Max: Fury Road way. I think it’s totally possible to do that with the absolute minimum amount of human characters and really characterize the creatures.

Of course, the jury’s out on whether this would actually be a success or not. On one hand, it is important to note that previous Godzilla movies have benefited from having its narratives intertwined with (human) historical context, such as the World War, tyrannical governments, ethics of science and more.

One could even argue, it is with humans in the picture that we actually see the different facets of this self-proclaimed intelligent species and understand who the real “monsters” are.

On the other hand, a monster-centric movie would allow us to more into the Monsterverse and Kaiju lore and expand it to include new, compelling characters on screen.

There is also something saying about how the Monsterverse puts the sometimes narcissist humans in their place by not making them the center of the universe.

Godzilla vs Kong did try this approach by minimizing human action. But to eliminate it completely? We’ll believe it when we see it.

Currently, the Monsterverse is rumored to be working on its next addition, possibly titled ‘Son of Kong.’

About Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong is an American kaiju-action movie. It is a sequel to Godzilla: King of Monsters and Kong: Skull Island and is the latest entry in the WB-Legendary Monsterverse. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and others.

Godzilla vs. Kong took in $285 million in just 12 days in theatres. As of now, it has grossed over $400 million, becoming the most successful movie in the pandemic era to date.

Humans have captured King Kong from Skull Island to help him find his true home. With them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But Kong’s return comes just in time for Godzilla cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. As the fearsome monsters square off in an epic battle for the ages, humanity looks to wipe out both of them and take back the planet once and for all.
