Young Sheldon Season 5 Episode 9: Release, Recap and Speculation

In Episode 8, Mary had to make peace with some of her family members’ decisions, while Sheldon managed to deal with yet another academic crisis at university. But his problems are far from over. Here’s what you can expect from the upcoming episode!

Episode 9 Preview and Speculations

Titled “The Yips and an Oddly Hypnotic Bohemian,” Episode 9 will have Missy educating Sheldon about the yips, a predicament she’s facing while playing baseball.

Yips is a sports term for any movement disorder athletes face, speculated to be caused or made worse by performance anxiety. It’s not contagious, but of course, after Sheldon hears about it, he goes through his own bout of yips to the tunes of Queen.

Older Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory could count on his friends to help calm his nerves, it is left to see how young Sheldon will deal with it. Perhaps the hypnotic bohemian in the title could allude to a family member helping him out.

(Season 5 is also set in the early 1980s which is when Queen’s Under Pressure was released).

The episode will also feature George Sr doing some house repairs at Brenda’s, which is sure to tease their implied fling.

Episode 8 Recap

I. Sheldon is Upset over a University Decision

Episode 8 is noticeably broken up into two storylines: Grand Chancellor and Den of Sins. The former is around Sheldon being upset that East Texas Tech is lowering its students’ science credit requirements. This doesn’t really affect Sheldon’s academic course, but he makes it his personal mission to reverse the decision.

Sheldon

President Hagemeyer tries to pacify him by inventing a “Grand Chancellor,” who has the final say in the matter. Sheldon is sent off on bootless errands from collating data to writing a scathing exposé on why this is a bad decision.

The university’s newspaper informs him that they cannot publish his article because the “Grand Chancellor” does not exist.

Sheldon has to admit defeat while throwing around tantrums, but he has the last laugh when President Hagemeyer receives a phone call from Stephen Hawking reprimanding her decision.

II. Mary Discovers Connie’s Gambling Room

Mary finds out that Connie’s laundromat is also being used as a front for an illegal gambling room, which she labels as the “Den of Sins.” Despite asking George Sr, Connie, and Georgie to correct this folly, none of them take her seriously.

Mary is distraught about being a bad mother, but Pastor Jeff tries to reassure her that Georgie is simply rebelling as teenagers do.

III. Mary and Sheldon Bond over Their Problems

Sheldon And Mary

Due to the university incident, Sheldon is taken back by how easily everyone around him can lie and be deceptive. Mary calms his paranoia by promising him she’d never lie to him. Sheldon also comforts her by highlighting that even with having a “difficult” son like Sheldon, she has never failed as a mother.
