Zack Snyder has revealed further details about bringing back Jared Leto’s Joker for the upcoming Snyder Cut. The director’s version of Justice League will be the original vision of the 2017 film directed by Joss Whedon, who stepped in after Snyder left the franchise due to a personal tragedy.
Initially created by Snyder and writer Chris Terrio, the DC Universe’s character collaboration was supposed to be extended into a trilogy and had a big-budget five-movie plan. Unfortunately, Synder’s stepping down caused a disbalance in the whole project, starting with 2017’s Justice League. Directed by Joss Whedon, who completely deviated from the original script and made major changes to the editing and production, the movie was criticized heavily.
Soon after, fans started pushing the Snyder Cut campaign—which demanded the original version to be released and raised money for a suicide prevention charity. (Snyder’s 20-year-old daughter had committed suicide due to which he had to step down from the movie)
The campaign, which started in 2017, was finally successful after Warner Bros. decided to give it a shot, and Snyder himself confirmed the news in May of last year.
Snyder Cut was funded for the completion of filming and added visual effects. It was also confirmed that the finished product would be released on HBO Max. It was first reported to be a miniseries. However, it was later confirmed that the Snyder Cut would be a 4-hour long cinematic extravaganza with short breaks in between.
As the cast and crew started teasing more and more details from the movie, one of the biggest reveals was the return of Jared Leto’s Joker. Seen at the end of the first trailer, the moment was unexpected yet delightful for fans.
Snyder, who recently sat down for an interview with The New York Times, spoke about the journey of bringing his film to completion.
The discussion eventually shifted to the new additions, specifically the reason behind bringing back Leto. Answering the question, Snyder remarked on the importance of portraying Batman and Joker together and how it’d be “weird” if they weren’t going to meet up. Furthermore, as this will be the director’s last venture in the franchise, it was all the more reason to go out with a bang.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is scheduled for release on March 18, 2021.
