Zack Snyder’s Justice League: A New Movie Altogether?

Zack Snyder’s Justice League has finally arrived on HBO Max. But is it a whole new movie, and how does it compare to 2017’s Justice League? And above all, is it any good?

The story of how the Snyder Cut came to be is a complicated one. To put it briefly, the director stepped down from the initial production following a personal tragedy in 2017 (the suicide of his daughter, Autumn).

His exit led Warner Bros. to bring in Avengers director Joss Whedon, who practically changed the movie’s original vision. Combined with his reshoots of many scenes involving tacky humour, poor CGI effects and different framing, the result was unlike Snyder’s aesthetic. The movie was criticised heavily and was a box office disaster earning a paltry $657.9 million compared to its $300 million budget.

For the past four years, members of the cast and crew along with fans of the franchise campaigned for the release of what they called the “Snyder Cut”- director Zack Snyder’s original vision of the movie. Alongside teasing black and white shots of the film, Snyder finally confirmed the movie’s release in 2021 on HBO Max. With a budget of $70 million, the four-hour-long film invested in quality CGI and ordered reshoots during the pandemic.

As one of the most anticipated movies of the year, the release was met with enthusiasm as many news outlets reported the movie’s debut caused HBO Max to crash. Now, the final product is out there, available for all to see. But the question remains. Is it a different movie?

To get a clear answer to that, we have to delve into the similarities and differences between both movies. In many ways, it is the movie it was meant to be when production began in 2016. Most of the footage comes from principal photography, with only a handful of reshoots and recompositions having filmed last year.

However, Snyder’s version has added characters that were cut from the original, such as Joker, Nuidis Vulko, Lex Luthor and many others. Besides an extra 2 hour runtime, overall, the movie follows the same plot and can be concluded to be Snyder’s purest version of the movie.
