F9 Raced So Fast That It’s Already Here For An On-Demand Release

F9: The Fast Saga had a successful theatrical release after having delayed almost a year due to the pandemic.

The film made its theatrical debut internationally on May 19 and in the U.S. on June 25. Now, without much delay, the film is getting an on-demand release this Friday, July 30.

The latest film in the Fast & Furious franchise had a successful box office run with $70 million during its first weekend and has earned $622 million worldwide so far.

The film had the most successful debut since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, beating out the previous record-holder, A Quiet Place Part II.

The announcement comes after Cinemark struck a deal with Universal in November that enables the studio to put new movies on premium video-on-demand platforms 17 days after they open in theaters.

According to the deal, films that generate at least $50 million in opening weekend ticket sales, however, must play exclusively in theaters for 31 days or five full weekends, the companies said at the time. A condition that F9 checks off. (via Variety)

As much as we hope the movie theatre experience returns as people go back to living a normal life, it seems unlikely any time soon as the loom of another wave threatens the audience.

However, F9 still has the potential to pump up the numbers considering that people who were hesitant to go to the cinemas will definitely pay the fee to watch the film on demand.

F9 follows Dominic Toretto and crew as they go up against his estranged younger brother Jakob, who teams up with Cipher to steal a device that can hack into any computer-controlled weapons system on Earth.

The cast includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. Justin Lin directs.

According to a Deadline report, Universal also signed another deal with Peacock that allow its theatrical releases starting next year to play on Peacock during each pic’s pay-one partner TV window, which is 120 days after a title’s theatrical release.

So it is likely that F10 and F11 will go to Peacock instead of HBO Max.
