Former Game of Thrones Director Comes on Board to Direct the Blade Runner Sequel

The Blade Runner 2099 series has hired Jeremy Podeswa of Game of Thrones as its director.

While the original Blade Runner movie by Ridley Scott did not perform well with critics or at the box office when it was released in 1982, it has since gained a cult following.

In 2017, Denis Villeneuve directed the highly anticipated sequel, Blade Runner 2049, but even that did not perform well financially.

The Blade Runner franchise expanded to the small screen in 2021 with the release of the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Additionally, it was announced last year that a live-action series called Blade Runner 2099, produced by Ridley Scott, is currently in development for Prime Video.

According to Variety, Jeremy Podewsa has been enlisted to direct the pilot episode and possibly more. In addition, Tom Spezialy, who previously worked on The Leftovers, has joined the show’s writing team.

Blade Runner 2099 is a follow-up TV series to Blade Runner 2049 by Villeneuve, which in turn was a continuation of Scott’s initial film.

While the storyline for the show is still a secret, it is clear from the title that it will take place five decades after the events of Blade Runner 2049.

We don’t know yet which characters will be featured in the sequel series, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) or K (Ryan Gosling) return.

Shining Girls’ writer Silka Luisa heads the team of writers for Blade Runner 2099.

The group already consists of Michael Green, who collaborated on the screenplay for Blade Runner 2049, and the recently added Spezialy.

Podewsa is another valuable member of the creative team, having been nominated for four Emmy Awards for directing episodes of highly regarded dramas such as Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and The Pacific.

Under Scott’s supervision, Blade Runner 2099 has brought together a talented team of writers and now, a director. The next step should be to hire the appropriate set of actors, and they’ll be good to go!
