Friends Might be Remastered and Re-Released in 4K

Friends executive producer and director Kevin Bright reveals the Sitcom might be re-released in 4K.

Friends ran on NBC for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004. Friends was critically acclaimed, heavily awarded, and the series finale is the fifth most-watched series finale in television history with 52.5 million American viewers.

Kevin Bright revealed that while no new content is currently planned, the original run of Friends is a candidate to be re-released in true 4K.

Bright told THR,

The thing we’re invested in now is Friends is a candidate for true 4K, we shot Friends all on film and I’d like to see all the shows remastered in 4K for the future.

Bright also said that he would like to see all shows remastered in 4K. 4K resolution is generic and refers to any resolution with a horizontal pixel count of approximately 4,000. Films that were or are shot on 35mm film can be remastered in 4K.

Bright also explained that he previously remastered 12 episodes for theater release, on the occasion of sitcom’s 25th anniversary two years ago, but found some faults in it which he wants to correct this time.

Bright, Crane, and Kauffman, the executive producer of the show, all emphasized that they were happy with how the show ended and emphatically rejected calls for a spin-off series. Bright produced the 2004 spin-off Joey, but told THR he wasn’t happy as it did not create the same magic.

Crane described Friends success as “lightning in a bottle with a perfect cast” and noted the low odds of recreating such a massive hit.

While Bright has yet to secure an official 4K release for Friends, Warner Bros. recently announced plans for a 4K Ultra HD release of another ’90s favorite: Space Jam

Several movies, music videos, have gotten 4K re-releases in recent years, but a 4K re-release of the entirety of Friends would mean remastering 10 seasons, that is, 236 episodes.

If Bright is ready to take this challenge, it will certainly take some time, but with such an immense fanbase and enthusiasm, a re-release will surely spur plenty of rewatches and maybe even entice some first-time viewers.
