Moon Knight Costume Designer Reveals Hieroglyph Secrets and Easter Eggs

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight is unlike any other MCU show in terms of its story, pacing, style, and overall theme. And if you’re an avid fan, you might’ve already noticed that the series is packed with Easter eggs.

However, something that might not have been the easiest to catch is the Easter eggs hidden in the main character’s costumes.

Moon Knight costume designer Meghan Kasperlik spoke to Comicbook.com, revealing that the hieroglyphs on the vigilante superhero’s suit spell out certain phrases.

While the crest on the two suits symbolizes the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, the pants that Moon Knight’s avatar wears have a different message.

“‘Rise and live again as my fist of vengeance. My Moon Knight,’ That is in the hieroglyph in the trouser. On Mr. Knight, the Easter egg in that is that the buttons on the waistcoat are custom buttons that are Khonshu’s symbol. I had a metalsmith in-house that was making all of those.”

Kasperlik refrained from revealing much about other details for fear of spoiling the ending of the series but promised that there are more Easter eggs to come.

The designer paid a lot of attention to detail, making practical suits even for characters who would be rendered with the help of CGI. Khonshu and Taweret both got their practical suits despite being entirely computer-generated.

“The Khonshu costume is a fully functioning costume. The Taweret costume is also head-to-toe designed and produced. Both Khonshu and Taweret are both made in-house, so it was really exciting.”

Kasperlik added that Taweret’s costume has such minuscule details that the team had to stitch it in pieces. It includes hieroglyphs on her skirt and ornaments, adding that it looks even more impressive in person.

Episode 5 is expected to show more of Taweret, so here’s hoping they rendered the details in while referencing the costume design.

In another interview with Disney Plus Informer, Kasperlik talked about the research that went into making the costumes appear so authentic. The designer had a synopsis of each episode to get an idea of what she was dealing with.

“I’d already done a ton of research into Egypt and the graphic novels for my interview, so I took that and jumped in; I didn’t even wait for them to tell me if I had gotten the job or not; I just kept going… So I really just continued to dive in and continued to explore the Egyptian aspect of it because I had spoken to Mohamed Diab, who was directing. He’s Egyptian, so I knew that was something he would want to incorporate into the series. So I continued my research into that and looked at Egyptian culture today versus ancient Egyptian culture thousands of years ago.”

The costume designer also added her personal touch by creating a unique fabric for the suit with 3D printing and cutting it into strips. She revealed that Moon Knight’s costume consists of 803 different pattern pieces.

Moon Knight has two more episodes left to go in the season, with new episodes out on Wednesdays on Disney+.
