Freaks Director Duo Set to Direct Final Destination 6

New Line has hired Freaks co-directors, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, to move forward with Final Destination 6.

The horror movie franchise began with the 2000 film, Final Destination, produced by New Line, and starring Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, and the legendary Tony Todd as Bludworth. In the first Final Destination film, viewers were introduced to the concept of a group of people escaping the plans of Death, only to have a variety of unexpected events lead to their demise anyway.

Final Destination’s box-office success enabled the makers to create a franchise out of it, which is currently five films long. However, it’s been a decade since the audience last saw a group of people embark on their crazy adventures with Death.

First announced in 2019, Final Destination 6 is currently in development. It took a big step forward when Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man: No Way Home, joined the team as a producer. However, the team had not finalized the director until now.

According to reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Final Destination 6 has taken another major step forward by hiring Freaks directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Freaks is a 2018 horror movie that received very strongly positive critical reviews and saw a sudden boost in popularity once it was released on Netflix.

Thus, the directing duo is perfect for a project like Final Destination 6, which is described as a relaunch of the franchise. It will take place in the same universe as the first five Final Destination films. Stein and Lipovsky will direct the sixth installment in the franchise based on a script written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor and assisted by Jon Watts.

Lipovsky and Stein were chosen after a year-long search and careful consideration that included over 200 candidates, so surely New Line believes the duo to be best for the job. Those who have watched Freaks can vouch for this, but what makes it even more evident is a legendary Zoom call pitch.

The Zoom call with New Line producers and executives began as a usual business call, with the two filmmakers in the same room. As the meeting moved towards its end, the fireplace behind them began burning too strongly, which allowed the fire to catch the mantle above.

At this point, the directors stopped the meeting to use extinguishers to put out the fire, much to the relief of the people on the Zoom call. But after the two sat down, a ceiling fan fell down and decapitated one of them. The duo pulled off this interesting pitch using a combination of pre-recorded material and visual effects to win over the producers.

The creativity and ingenuity displayed by Stein Lipovsky in their unique pitch proved that the two were perfect for taking up Final Destination 6. The filmmakers are clearly passionate about this genre and will be able to deliver the kind of inventive deaths that fans of the franchise expect.

Only time will tell if the filmmakers can live up to the fans’ expectations. Meanwhile, I think the team should definitely release the footage from the infamous Zoom call that landed them the project!
