John Wick: Chapter 4 blew up in theaters this week and will easily pass the $200 million mark by the weekend at the worldwide box office. The latest installment of the franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the titular character and directed by Chad Stahelski, has garnered great acclaim for its intense action and stunning choreography.
But one disappointment fans have spoken up about is the runtime. The film’s released cut comes under the three-hour mark at 169 minutes, but the original cut was closer to four hours, stopping short of 225 mins. The John Wick fandom wondered why the audience couldn’t get the entire film, and producer Erica Lee just gave us the answer.
The John Wick 4 producer didn’t mince words when explaining why the film’s “rough and boring” original cut wouldn’t have worked. She stated the audience hadn’t “missed anything” even after the one-hour slash. Read her full answer below:
There [weren’t] really that many big lifts. We definitely shot a lot, but the movie’s hovered around three hours for almost all of post. The 3:45 was so rough and boring in parts and just a lot of… I mean, it was not good [Laughs]. You didn’t miss anything.
Lionsgate is certainly pleased with the fourth film in the series, considering that they’re looking at massive profits by the end of its theatrical run, and have shown an interest in making a John Wick 5. But Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, who have stuck with the franchise since it began in 2014, have stated that they want some time apart from the titular hitman.
But don’t despair; the Wickiverse is going to keep growing till we get our hands on John Wick 5. The Continental, a limited prequel series featuring Winston and the origins of the hitman’s neutral territory, is set to premiere on Peacock in 2023.
Ballerina is a spinoff from John Wick about an assassin looking to avenge her family, starring Ana de Armas, and can be expected to hit theaters in 2024. Keanu Reeves will return as the famous character in that spinoff, and it won’t just be a cameo!
