Squid Game’s Dalgona TikTok Trend Gets Teen Badly Injured

No, TikTok does not have the best DIY hacks, especially not for making Squid Game’s infamous Dalgona Candy. A recipe from TikTok has landed a teen in hospital with first-degree burns.

14-year-old Aiden Higgie from Sydney, Australia, used a TikTok recipe that instructed makers to mix water, sugar, and soda bicarbonate in a plastic cup. After this, it goes into the microwave.

Sadly for Higgie, he failed to use a microwave-safe cup. As soon as he pulled out the cup from the microwave, it exploded in his hand, injuring most of his limbs.

The teen was in the hospital being treated for first-degree burns on his hands and nerve damage on his leg. Fortunately, he is on the road to recovery.

Two other teens from Australia have also been reported to have suffered similar injuries due to trying the recipe.

There are clearly a lot of lessons to be learned here (albeit painfully for the injured teens)—always check your ingredients and utensils. Adult supervision is of utmost importance during such activities.

Then comes the recipe. The TikTok microwave version is not only inauthentic but also evidently hazardous.

Even when one does use the correct recipe, the Dalgona Candy, also known as Honeycomb toffee, can be dangerous to maneuver and undoubtedly hard to master in the first go.

It may have simple ingredients, but the pros know that it needs immense heat that is handled with care.

This is not the first time that Squid Game has earned some bad rap about elements on its show. Before Halloween, a few New York elementary schools banned Squid Game costumes due to their violent implications.

I’m going to let the folks at Squid Game decide whether all publicity is good publicity. As for everyone else—if you’re attempting to make Dalgona Candy, take this as your reminder to stay cautious.
