New Synopsis For The Batman Gives A Better Hint At The Film’s Plot

It’s not just a call… It’s a warning.

The Batman is rising again, inciting terror and fear in the hearts of all the criminals of Gotham City, and if the new synopsis is to be taken as a premonition, the bad guys really ought to be scared to death.

Warner Bros has revealed a new, detailed synopsis for Matt Reeves’ The Batman after being radio silent for more than a month since the film’s main trailer dropped at DC FanDome this October.

The synopsis doesn’t give away too much but still confirms everything we saw in the full-length trailer. It further emphasizes the Caped Crusader is more of a young, amateur detective and a “lone vigilante” than the perfectly rational and adult superhero we usually get.

The Batman synopsis reads,

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon – amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

It further mentions things that were hinted at in the first teaser where Bruce Wayne is bombarded with a series of riddles and clues on murder sites, with intentions to trap him into some evil scheme.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

It is interesting to note the point about Batman forging “new relationships,” as the first person who comes to mind is Selina Kyle. But besides her, there have been several rumors about The Joker making a cameo at the end, setting up a bigger storyline for Reeves’ trilogy plan.

Joker

We have already seen glimpses of Arkham Asylum in the trailer and it wouldn’t be far off to consider a Scarecrow cameo. So besides our three prime villains, if the film further adds more from the Gallery, it’ll be too ambitious for its own good and might overwhelm the audience.

During last year’s DC FanDome event, Reeves had mentioned that the film will also act as the origin point for a lot of Rogues Gallery villains.

As is the case with a lot of superhero films, including the likes of Justice League, Birds of Prey, and Eternals, if there are more characters/concepts introduced than the viewer can digest, it ends up leaving little to no remarkable impression.

I, personally, hope that DC explores other potential villains besides The Joker or Scarecrow, otherwise this Batman story would end up being the same one we’ve seen over the years, but just in a different setting with different faces.

In the worst case scenario, even if the first film does end up making this same mistake, the sequel could make up for it the same way Snyder Cut made the 2017 Justice League more coherent by giving each character their own time in the spotlight.

After facing numerous pandemic-related delays, The Batman finally comes out in theaters on March 4, 2022.

About The Batman

The brand-new Batman solo will see Bruce Wayne/ Batman in his second year of fighting crime as he explores the corruption that plagues Gotham City and how it may tie to his own family, in addition to coming into conflict with a serial killer known as the Riddler.
