Toheeb Jimoh, who plays Sam Obisanya in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, shares some details about his character’s story arc in the upcoming Season 3 of the sports comedy.
The show follows the story of the titular character, Ted Lasso, who gets recruited to coach the struggling English Premier League football team, AFC Richmond. His lack of experience in the sport doesn’t slow him down at first, but Rebecca Welton, the team’s current owner, hopes it will tank the team’s career sooner or later and get her revenge against her ex-husband.
The Apple TV+ series stars Jason Sudeikis in the lead role alongside his co-stars Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Jeremy Swift, Hannah Waddingham, Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, and Juno Temple, among others.
The previous season had finally seemed to tie Jimoh’s Sam Obisanya’s struggles with a new beginning in Ted Lasso’s team. He had proved his loyalty to his team after he rejected a wealthy deal that would have meant him leaving AFC Richmond for a Nigerian Team and abandoning his new venture of a Nigerian restaurant in London.
The previous two seasons of the show were highly praised by viewers and critics for mesmerizing performances, dramatically satisfying writing, and well-placed humor. The show had scored big at several award shows, including the Emmys, where the show won Outstanding Comedy Series the first year and got a nomination in the second year.
Toheeb Jimoh teased Sam’s character arc in the upcoming Season 3 at the Ted Lasso For Your Consideration event via The Hollywood Reporter. Jimoh could not disclose anything about Season 3 being the last of the series, but he opened up about his character’s story coming up.
I don’t know [beyond season three]. What I do know is that we’re going to be doing effectively the same things we’ve been doing for Seasons one and two by just continuing to resolve a lot of the character journeys. Especially for Sam, we’re going to see a lot more of what his motivations are in his relationships with his family.
The sports-comedy actor highlighted Obisanya’s journey in the future. He said that the Nigerian restaurant in London, and his relationship with his family and girlfriend, will be explored in Season 3 and will be significant in his character’s story development.
Stuff is coming [with the restaurant]. He does open it and does set it up. There’s an interesting story about what happens there. I feel like it’s really important because that restaurant becomes his way of laying down roots in London. He is Nigerian, but he is now in London, and that is his home. What happens to the restaurant feels significant to his story as an immigrant.
With Jimoh’s answers, fans can assume that Sam will have finally accepted that London is his new home and will focus on his life as a British Nigerian immigrant while also exploring his ties with his family.
More details will surface eventually for the upcoming Season 3, and hopefully a confirmed release date too.
