What is a palisman?

A palisman is a mystical emblem that is bonded to a witch and acts as their familiar staff. It is acquired by a witch during their education. Palismen are magic-enhancers and close companions to witches, which also serve as transportation, weapons, and more.

A palisman is made from an enchanted plant called palistrom. The witches carve their palismen themselves and they are usually in the shape of an animal or magical creature.

Besides the witch’s bile sac, a palisman also has its own source of power. A witch can call for their staff by command or make it appear out of thin air whenever needed.

How does Luz get her palisman?

In season 2 episode 6, “Hunting Palismen”, the time comes for Luz and her classmates to adopt their palismen. However, Luz ends up being the only one without one as none of the palismen connected with her.

In the 20th episode of the same season, “Clouds on the Horizon”, Luz decides to carve her palisman into the shape of an egg. She says her intention behind this is to let it decide what it wants to be, at its own pace.

In season 3 episode 2, “For the Future”, Luz’s palisman hatches!

Towards the start of the episode when Luz and Amity are talking about their palismen, Amity tells Luz that hers only hatched when she openly admitted what she wanted the most. Luz says that her two big wishes are to become a witch and help her friends; however, her egg still doesn’t hatch.

Later in the episode, Luz has a heartfelt conversation with her mom, Camila, and admits to her that all she ever wanted was to be understood. This revelation causes the egg to start glowing after which it hatches and turns into a purple swirling orb.

During the big battle in the same episode, Luz’s staff allows her to use her powers without having to write the usual glyphs she was using before. After everything settles down, the palisman becomes fully formed and is revealed to be a snake-shifter!

Luz decides to call her Stringbean and as Luz says, she’s perfect! She flawlessly encapsulates Luz’s essence with her indigo body, tiny pointed ears, and big curious eyes.

How strong is Luz’s palisman, Stringbean?

Stringbean can change into anything ranging from a dragon to a scorpion, to a bat. This ability is unique to Stringbean as no other palismen in the series have exhibited a similar power.

This makes perfect sense considering how Luz’s journey to becoming a witch was also a unique one, with her writing glyphs and carving an egg staff.  Luz is often portrayed as someone who thinks outside the box and does things in ways that others don’t think of and hence this whole episode correctly falls in line with her story arc.

We still don’t know the full potential of Stringbean but we can expect more to come. The Owl House’s finale episode hasn’t gotten a confirmed release date yet and it is being speculated that the episode will release sometime in April 2023.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait till then to see Stringbean in action but we can be assured that the writers will not disappoint us.
