Nancy Drew Spin-off, Tom Swift, Gets a Nod for Series at The CW

Nancy Drew fans will now have one more titular detective and his adventures to look forward to. According to Variety, the female teen detective’s spin-off series, Tom Swift, has been ordered to series at The CW.

Tom Swift has appeared in Edward Stratemeyer’s novels since Nancy Drew’s inception. Simon and Schuster also published an entire series based on Tom Swift in 2019.

For decades, Nancy Drew has served as a companion to many young fans, especially girls, worldwide. The series was considered the female version of the popular teen mystery novels Hardy Boys.

Tian Richards as Tom Swift

Tian Richards will essay the role of the black, gay, millionaire inventor Tom Swift. However, this is not the first time viewers will be seeing him in live-action. Richards appeared as Swift in the Nancy Drew Season 2 episode titled ‘The Celestial Visitor.’ The episode is meant to serve as a backdoor pilot for the upcoming series.

Meanwhile, LeVar Burton will be voicing Tom’s A.I., Barclay. With Barclay, Tom will explore the sci-fi world full of conspiracy and venture on a quest to find the truth. Tom’s genius flair for innovation will come in handy as he tries to stay a step ahead of an Illuminati-sized group wanting to stop him at all costs.

The spin-off series has been in talks since October 2020. Now that the show has been ordered to series, fans can expect the show to debut anytime around 2021-2022.

However, The CW is known to create an out-of-the-ordinary storyline, such as with the Archie-comics-inspired Riverdale. There are high chances the network will give Tom Swift an unconventional storyline, too, by only keeping the basic plot together.

Black representation on screen is another reason that has the viewers excited. Conventionally, the storylines of Hardy Boys and even Nancy Drew were centered around straight, white people. To have a black and an LGBT representation on screen already shows the different route Tom Swift might take.

The upcoming series will be created by Nancy Drew’s co-creators and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, under Fake Empire and CBS Studios.
