The latest Marvel superhero (oops, I mean attorney-at-law) to debut is Jennifer Walters, better known as She-Hulk. We all know that since the MCU is a vast web of interconnected events, it’s best to be aware of its overall timeline. This will help you understand the films and shows better.
But like most MCU shows, She-Hulk doesn’t explicitly blare out when it takes place. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law starts off after the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Eternals in the MCU year 2023. However, it has not been confirmed if it takes place before or after Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home.
Marvel fans love a little mystery and have a penchant for decoding clues. Still, Ep 1 quite quickly revealed that She-Hulk got her powers after Avengers: Endgame.
When she and Bruce go on a trip together, Bruce is still sporting a cast on his hand that alludes to when he wore the Infinity Gauntlet to set Thanos’ actions straight. This also points to the fact that She-Hulk takes place after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings since Bruce’s arm had not healed then, either.
But a lot of events, shows, and films have occurred between Endgame and the present MCU timeline. So, while we had a general idea that She-Hulk was set post the apocalyptic battle, we didn’t exactly know when.
She-Hulk Messes up the MCU Timeline
It’s She-Hulk Episode 2 that causes a huge problem.
The first Easter egg points to She-Hulk being set after both Shang-Chi and The Eternals. This is seen during the montage when Jennifer is looking for a job and there’s a headline that reads out, “Why is there a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean?”
However, at the end of the same episode, it is depicted that Jennifer’s newest client, Abomination, who was in prison, has escaped and was seen fighting a cage match against Wong in Macau.
Does that sound familiar? Well yes, because it’s the exact same scene we see at the beginning of Shang-Chi as well.
This causes a huge discrepancy. If She-Hulk takes place after Shang-Chi and The Eternals, how can Abomination’s escape (that technically should occur after both the movies) be depicted during the Shang-Chi movie?
Maybe the creative team didn’t realize that their narratives don’t fit in as seamlessly as they thought. For any of this to make sense, we’ll have to just pretend that Bruce’s arm was not injured during Shang-Chi’s post-credits scene.
Or, that Abomination traveled through time, courtesy of Wong’s portals. Sorcerer Supreme, care to clear this one out for us?
