Why We Don’t see Jake Sully Fly Toruk in Avatar 2 Explained

Jake Sully’s position as the clan leader of the Navi’ took a lot of work. After being banished from Pandora for his double-agent stint, leading to the destruction of the Hometree and the death of Neytiri’s father, Jake had gone to great lengths to gain their trust.

By taming the Last Shadow, a beast all feared & no one could conquer, not only did Jake regain the Navi’s trust but also earned the title of Toruk Makto, and thus was named the clan’s leader after Neytiri’s father. The Toruk also played a vital role in the fight against the human invaders in the 2009 film, but we missed him in the sequel that hit theaters this Friday.

Though we did see Jake take to the skies several times in the film, we didn’t see the familiar bright red wings of Toruk. Do you want to know why you didn’t catch one glimpse of the mighty beast over the three-plus hours of the 2022 sequel?

The Last Shadow Jakes Toruk

After the fight between the Navi and the humans, Jake released Toruk, claiming Toruk Makto was no longer needed, and thus the creature could be free just as his people are. Sully set the Last Shadow free after the first film’s events, and we bet he thought differently after the sequel, where Toruk would’ve been a game changer.

Jake needed the title of Toruk Makto to emphasize how his heart belonged with the Navi’, despite what the elder sand Neytiri thought after discovering his betrayal. Once he’d proved so, he figured the Last Shadow was a being best left alone to roam free in the skies.

So, when he bid farewell to his Toruk, he did with a good heart, and that’s why we don’t see the red beast in Avatar: The Way of the Water.
