Identity Of The Black Cat: Who Betrayed Thomas Shelby In Season 5?

Identity Of The Black Cat: Who Betrayed Thomas Shelby In Season 5?

Every season of Peaky Blinders, Thomas Shelby plans exhaustive strategies to win against his enemies. And every season, he pulls off the impossible. But season 5 ended with all his plans failing and his world crumbling down. All this because of a black cat – a betrayer.

For once, it was Tommy who had lost. Yes, he’s come close to death before. “So close!” But this time, it was different even for him. His plans to assassinate the British fascist Oswald Mosley went downhill in a royal fashion. Barney got killed, Aberama Gold was stabbed to death, and Arthur barely saved himself.

Earlier in the season, you come to know that Thomas has had a dream of a black cat. He attributes this black cat to a mole on the inside. He believes that there is a betrayer in the Peaky Blinders family. In the finale, his premonition comes true, and there was a black cat indeed.

1. So, Who Betrayed Tommy and the Family?

Gina is the one who betrayed Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders season 5. While the show has not officially revealed the identity of the “Black Cat,” all the facts and fingers point towards Gina and Oswald Mosley to be the perpetrators.

Gina and Mosley could’ve had a previous connection, and they both wanted Tommy out of their way to achieving their motives. Mosley wanted to form a fascist government, while Gina’s motive, though remains undisclosed, she might want to expand the business to America. This makes Gina the mole.

Gina’s connections with Oswald Mosley at this time have been hinted at in several instances of the show. Here are a few:

Hint 1: Mosley Knowing Michael’s Regular Club In America

When Oswald Mosley meets Arthur and Michael for the first time, he mentions The Gladiator club in Detroit as Michael’s go-to club. Mosley could’ve known this only if he had someone over there. That someone could be Gina.

Hint 2: The Encounter With Fascists At Belfast

In episode 2, Tommy gets a call from a lady who has held Michael captive. She mentions that he is dealing with people from Glasgow. People that Tommy and higher authorities in the government want dead. Gina was there the whole time, but nothing happened to her.

Hint 3: Gina’s Lie About Her Pregnancy

Gina mentions that she is pregnant, but when Polly touches her stomach, she feels nothing. Polly, through her hereditary gifts, can sense when a woman is pregnant even before they do. This could mean she’s lying.

Hint 4: Oswald And A Blonde Girl In The Green Room

In the final episode, Mosley is seen having sex with a ballerina in the green room before his speech. They don’t show the face, but her hair is blonde, her skin complexion is pale white, her shoulders are thin. These are the same traits that Gina has.

2. How Gina Manipulated Michael?

When Gina met Michael, he would’ve been a frustrated man. His anger against Tommy would’ve been quite visible. Finding this as the weak spot, Gina grew closer to him, became his wife, and was on her way to make him sit on the throne of the Shelby company.

In the series, she is always seen as provocative and constantly gets on the family’s nerves. This shows she’s insightful and understands people’s vulnerabilities. While talking to Michael, she would’ve leveraged his anger to deepen the already strained relationship between him and Tommy.

After doing so, the final straw was to get Michael to propose a restructuring of the company. This proposal would make him the head, knowing well, it won’t bode well with Tommy. And precisely that’s what happened.

When Tommy and the others walked out, she says, “Guess we’re forced to take the second option.” Tommy returns to the place, and the space almost looks suspicious. Almost like someone’s listening to Tommy as he relays his plan of how he’d kill Mosley.

This could be a strong indication that Gina leaked Tommy’s plans to Mosley. And the rest, as we know, is history!

3. How Will Tommy Recover From This?

Thomas is known to get back at people who stand in his way. And if there’s a betrayer, let’s just say they’ll wish they were dead.

I think Season 6, being the final one, will be spectacular for Alfie to come out in the open, form an open alliance with Tommy and bring Mosley down. But that might come at a cost.

I. Will Tommy Die In Season 6?

Thomas’s health was deteriorating throughout season 6. The fascists think he is tired and done. At the end of season 5, Mosley slyly calls him an old man, and Michael talks about his succession, telling that Tommy’s got wounds on the inside. This refers to Tommy’s PTSD.

Throughout the five seasons, Tommy is seen to consume opium, drink, and smoke. We see him slowly breaking down as anyone with war PTSD does. His lack of sleep is another indication of that.

At the end of Season 5, we see him walk towards Grace as the closing credits appear. This could indicate the Thomas is slowly letting go.

Season 6 could also show him come so close to death as he did in Season 2, except this time he just might die. After all, through the different seasons, the one thing that brought some semblance of normalcy in his life was Grace. His demise would mean that he’ll join Grace again and perhaps, be at peace even.

Guess we’ll have to find this out in the next season!
