Who is Maverick’s new wingman after Goose’s death?

The Top Gun: Maverick trailer pretty clearly showed the various beats of the film. Right from the presence of Iceman, Maverick’s rebellious attitude, Goose’s son, Rooster’s presence in Maverick’s life, and an impossible mission at hand, it was all there.

The film takes place 30 years after the first one, and it looks like although a lot has changed, a few things haven’t. One of the critical parts of Top Gun was the death of Maverick’s partner, Goose. In an unfortunate series of events, the two had to eject from their planes. While Tom Cruise’s Maverick ejected adequately and fell into the ocean, his partner Goose couldn’t make it alive.

On ejecting, Goose went headfirst into the fighter jet’s canopy and, as a result, died on the spot. This forms a central plot point in Top Gun: Maverick as we see the protagonist carry the guilt for the incident even after 30 years.

He even comes face to face with his son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, and the latter doesn’t even try to hide his anger and disdain for his father’s best bud. However, Maverick has to keep all this aside because they have a special mission at hand, with limited time to train all the pilots. We also know that Maverick doesn’t have a wingman and has to choose one between Hangman and Rooster. So, who gets the spot?

Rooster is Maverick’s new wingman for the special mission. He is Goose’s son, and Maverick chooses him to show that he trusts him.

Although Pete Mitchell was called to Top Gun to train the best of the best pilots for the mission, in the end, it is established that none of them would be able to do it without him. The mission was nearly impossible, and the team needed someone like Maverick to pull it off without any casualties.

It was even more important for Maverick that all his pilots make it alive because he couldn’t lose another person after Goose. The guilt crushed him and even made him apprehensive of Rooster’s abilities.

In fact, he had already blocked his papers and inhibited his career growth because he thought Rooster wasn’t ready. Rooster was enraged at this and even went on to tell Maverick that he wouldn’t trust him as his father did and repeat the same mistake.

However, when all was said and done, Maverick still chose Rooster because he wanted to make a statement. It was simple. Maverick trusted Rooster’s capabilities, but more importantly, he entrusted him with his own life.

Top Gun: Maverick is a must-watch for both fans and non-fans of the original film. The action sequences are as authentic as they can get.

In fact, all actors were made to fly in the actual fighter jets, and the shots of them flying in the jets are all real. Watch it for the drama, the emotions, and the sheer brilliance involved in the choreography of stunts and action scenes.
