“Mother, they wouldn’t let me pass…” Thomas Shelby’s Words Explained

Peaky Blinders Season 6 premiere was one of the saddest episodes in the show. We lost Aunt Polly, who held the Shelby family together, and we saw Thomas finally break.

After Mosley’s assassination was botched, Thomas was devastated because he had finally met an adversary he couldn’t defeat.

It felt like Thomas was crippled at the loss of a former comrade and Aberama Gold, who was Polly’s husband. He started hallucinating and seeing Grace, who told him it was time. So he pulled the trigger, but as fate would have it, he didn’t die.

Fearing that Thomas would do something erratic like that, Arthur had emptied the pistol. Thomas recovers from the shock and says, “Mother, they let you pass. They wouldn’t let me pass, as if there were to be another consequence.”

So what do Thomas’ words mean?

Thomas refers to his late mother and says the gypsy spirits guarding life and death are not letting him die. This could be because there would be other consequences to his death.

Lizzie heard Thomas pull the trigger and called him a coward. She was disgusted at how he was going to abandon his family and choose to kill himself.

Perhaps this is what Thomas meant when he said there would be another consequence. So far, 4 episodes have come out, and Thomas’ only mission in season 6 has been to find a way out of this mess for him and his family.

Even in Episode 4, he stresses how he’s trying to change for the better, and he just needs to get done with one last job.

After that, he’ll be free from everything, spend time with his family and settle in the mountains. All these are promises he’s made Lizzie throughout this season.

However, with the big reveal in Episode 4, it looks like Thomas just might pass into the afterlife. The doctors who had scanned him for tuberculosis found that he didn’t have any.

However, they did find a tumor in his brain, and he was diagnosed with tuberculoma.

His personal doctor explained to him how the disease had been caused by the same bacteria that causes tuberculosis, and he might’ve gotten it from Ruby.

The doctor tells how Thomas would’ve been facing symptoms such as seizures and hallucinations.

This explains the episodes Thomas was having earlier in this season. He hallucinated about his time at war and had seizures in the bathroom.

However, Thomas mentioned having a seizure once on the ship, on his way home. He hadn’t made contact with Ruby yet, so he couldn’t have gotten the tumor then, which means the seizure could’ve been due to some other reason.

While this is a potential loophole in this arc, I really hope they would bring some closure to this in a proper manner. Two more episodes are remaining in this season and the show itself. So I can’t wait to see what happens to Thomas by the end.
