Star Wars #17 Reveals The Reason Why Lando Joined The Rebels

Marvel Comics just published the most recent issue of the Star Wars comic series, Star Wars #17, and it reveals why Lando Calrissian joined the Rebels.

The latest issue explores the story taking place after Empire Strikes Back. It is a part of the Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters event and shows Lando working with Princess Leia, Luke, and the Rebellion.

One of the biggest betrayal moments in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was when Lando gave up Han Solo to Boba Fett and Darth Vader and betrayed the Rebels on Cloud City. Lando’s redemption arc came with saving Han in Return of the Jedi.

The new Marvel issue explores exactly how he became a member of the Rebel Alliance and how Leia helped him realize what it means to be a true Rebel when he didn’t really consider himself to be one.

Up till now, Lando was set on being there only till they had common goals, paired with his guilt about betraying Han. However, when the Millennium Falcon is severely damaged, Lando risks his life to get it working again.

He then assures a skeptical Leia that he isn’t an untrustworthy person who cowers away in the face of danger but that he just simply can’t take on wars that he knows he’s bound to lose.

It’s different when there are friends involved though. He tells Leia that he’s “as brave as they come and doesn’t care about the odds” if he has to save someone he really cares about.

Leia then reminds him that that’s precisely what makes someone a Rebel, and what do you know… the gambler understands and seems like he wants to become a Rebel for real.

This is a crucial moment going forward as in Return of the Jedi, Lando plays an essential role as a Rebellion hero in the Battle of Taanab.

Now that Lando is all in with the Rebel Alliance, they have to save Han from his carbonite block that’s right where the Empire and the Hutts fight in the War of the Bounty Hunters.

Titled ‘The Chase,’ the plot summary for this issue reads:

Darth Vader has claimed the carbonite-imprisoned Han Solo for himself and threatened to destroy Solo to draw Luke Skywalker out. Luke approached, then quickly fled, leading Vader away from the ”Vermillion” and Solo.

Now Luke must keep Vader at bay while Leia attempts to save her love, Han Solo.

Star Wars #17, written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Ramon Rosanas and Rachelle Rosenberg, was published on September 29, 2021.
