Why does Wong appear in every MCU title of Phases 4, 5, and 6?

Wong is one of the most beloved MCU characters in recent times. When all else fails, there’s Wong to bring a smile to all our faces. The character has appeared in numerous titles in MCU Phase 4, and I can’t help but wonder why.

What exactly is Wong’s role in MCU phases 4, 5, and 6? Why does he appear in almost every big MCU title?

Wong is the thread that connects multiple storylines in the MCU, currently. He is the tiny link between She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange, and even Spider-Man.

Earlier this year, the actor Benedict Wong did an interview with Empire Magazine. He funnily called Phase 4 the Wong Phase, considering how many titles he’s appearing in. While most of it was only in the form of cameos, his presence might mean something bigger for the universe.

If we look at the MCU right now, it is quite fragmented. We have new heroes such as Kate Bishop, Jen Walters, Kamala Khan, Shang-Chi, and several others. However, their storylines still seem quite disparate, and we don’t know how they will convene together.

After the Comic-Con event, we know that Phases 4, 5, and 6 will end with Avengers: Secret Wars. For this, the Young Avengers and other superheroes would have to come together by then.

If we look at the first three phases, all the characters weren’t introduced with a backstory. It was built along the way. Thus, we were invested in only a few names, such as Iron Man, Captain America, and a few others.

Since Phase 4, this seems to be changing. We’re being introduced to a new breed of superheroes who are fighting their own battles. It is likely that some of these character arcs and plotlines act as subplots for the larger Secret Wars event.

So, to set that up smoothly and not make the connections between various characters abrupt/sudden, we have someone like Wong. He is a familiar face who knows the different superheroes on and outside the planet.

This makes him the thread that can bring everyone together. Even if circumstances bring these characters together, we’ve got Wong, who has already got the ball rolling. A simple example would be him fighting Abomination in Shang-Chi.

Shag-Chi Follows Wong

While we didn’t know what that was at the time, we now do. The same incident was used as the premise for She-Hulk Episode 3. In a weird way, she got introduced to the world of superheroes through Wong and, by the looks of it, seems ready to embrace this avatar.

So, Wong’s cameos might seem insignificant, but they do have an apparent larger purpose. Essentially, to be that familiar face amongst different superheroes and bring them together when necessary.

This is merely my perception of everything that I have seen so far. There’s a good chance that the Sorcerer Supreme knows what’s coming. As a result, he appears in different places with different superheroes to prepare for it. It’s just that none of us, including the superheroes, realize this at the moment. Let’s see where Wong takes us now.
