The Chances of Another Season of Ted Lasso Are Low, But Not Zero Yet

With just two seasons, Ted Lasso became the most watched television series on Apple TV+. This football comedy has received over 20 Emmy Award Nominations for each of its seasons, out of which it won 7 awards for the first season and 4 for its second.

After another successful premiere for season 3, most fans are wondering: will Ted Lasso have a fourth season?

As of now, no, there has not been any confirmation of a fourth season. The showrunners, including Jason Sudeikis himself, always planned to end the show after three seasons.

However, interviews with some of the cast members revealed that this answer is a bit more complicated.

Will Ted Lasso have a Season 4?

Jason Sudeikis, who is also a creator and writer for the show, has said that the story of Ted Lasso was meant to be told in only three seasons.

When he and the rest of the creators, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, first came up with the idea and began developing the first season, they didn’t think it would be so well-received and hence, they didn’t plan so far ahead.

In an interview with Deadline, Sudeikis said:

This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering. Maybe by May 31, once all 12 episodes of the season [have been released], they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need anymore, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.

Season 3 is going to have longer episodes and it looks like all the major plotlines and characters arcs will come to an end by the finale.

In another interview with Variety, Sudeikis revealed:

While we’re flattered by the curiosity of ‘Is this the final season,’ the fact is that content-wise, if you just go by running time, this season has a Season 4 within itself.

Jason Sudeikis

It seems like Sudeikis is ready to say goodbye to Ted Lasso and without him well, there really isn’t a show.

However, none of the trailers or teasers for the third season mention that it will be the final one. This is the only sliver of hope we have that the writers may be reconsidering their decision to wrap up. Even Warner Bros. Television Group has expressed that they are welcome to a fourth season, if the creators are up for it.

Otherwise, it is highly unlikely that we will get a season 4.

Will there be any Spin-Offs?

Although a season 4 may be out of the question, Jason Sudeikis has said that he’s open to spin-off series for some of the characters and maybe even a cameo.

In their own separate interviews, other cast members said they would be open to the idea as well.

When asked about his own character, Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard and is also an Executive Producer, said:

It would be all about Beard in a new band he starts and they go to a different tropical location each episode. I talked to Tim Cook about it and he’s pretty excited so I think that’s going to happen.

Brendan Hunt

Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, and Hannah Waddingham, who plays Rebecca Welton, are also ready to explore their characters’ stories further, if they do get approved for spin-off series.
