Here’s Why the White Walkers Won’t Show up in HOTD

As if treachery and backstabbing wasn’t brutal enough, the characters in Game of Thrones had to deal with the imminent threat of the blood-curdling White Walkers. Despite them sending a chill down your spine (no pun intended), you have to admit they were a unique part of the show.

So will they make any appearances in House of the Dragon? Are we in for some epic showdowns with a younger Night King?

As it turns out, it is unlikely for the White Walkers or the Night King to appear in any large capacity in House of the Dragon. At this point in time, they were too weak to cross the Wall and prey on humans.

You must be thinking, surely the White Walkers exist even in the HOTD timeline. So what’s keeping them from appearing? Well let’s have a look:

The White Walkers’ Backstory

White Walkers are ancient creatures who were created to protect the Children of the Forest. However, they eventually broke free and took advantage of the Long Night, a period during which winter lasted for a whole generation. They all but conquered Westeros, animating the slain into their mindless wights.

Finally, the White Walkers were defeated in the Battle of Dawn, after which they were driven into the Land of Always Winter, and the Wall was erected.

All of this happens approximately 8,000 years before the events of both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. By this time, the Long Night, White Walkers, Children of the Forest, Giants, etc are nothing more than legends.

You may remember that even in GoT, most people living in the South would not believe the Northerners’ tales about the White Walkers because of how disconnected they were to that region.

The Night King Will Be a No-Show

At this point in history, these mythical creatures are considered folklore or children’s bedtime tales. Thus, it is safe to assume that even if anyone mentions the White Walkers, they’re either going to get teased or berated for their concerns.

Targaryens

The Targaryens are far too caught up with their thrones and dragons at the moment to care for any “imaginary” threat. (I can already imagine some Targaryen remarking how they could easily melt the White Walkers with their dragons’ flames—if only they knew!)

A major reason why it’s unlikely for the Night King or the White Walkers to make an appearance is because they don’t pose any threats currently. While they certainly do exist in the HOTD timeline, it’s believed they’re still weak and sleeping/regaining their strength.

Plus it would just be unnecessary to include these characters as they contribute nothing to the main storyline.

For now, Winter… is not coming.
